Seattle 5K (3.1 mi): Love 'Em or Leave 'Em Valentine's Day Dash, 2-8-09

I'm training for this half marathon in March and last week when I was talking about my training (I did 4.6 miles at the gym yesterday- hooray!), one of my friends (that I recently got back in touch with) mentioned the Greenlake Valentine's Day Love 'Em or Leave 'Em Day Dash.

Since I need to work on my outdoor portion of the half marathon training, I am going to sign up and the long sleeve shirts they give out are pretty darn cute. I always love free clothes!

I thought I would share the details of the event:

Sunday, 2/8/09, Starts at 8 am
$25 for registration before the day of the dash (up to the 2/7/09 and includes the shirt)
$35 for day of the dash
You can register online or in person

Sledging down Bellevue and Denny

The winter freeze that we're having in Seattle has caused a lot of problems, collisions, and bus accidents.

It has also created a sense of community. Last night, Sunday night, I hung out with about 60 strangers (plus my roomie and good friend) and went sledging down Denny at the top of Denny and Bellevue Way.

And a good time was to be had by all . . .

Peeps were using everything and anything to go sledging- couches, sandwich board signs advertising apartments for rent, laundry baskets, real sledges, trash bags, cardboard, couches, kiddie pools. . . you name it people were on it going down hill.

It was AWESOME!

Kiss the Bride aka The Gay Version of My Best Friend's Wedding

This past Thursday, I went and saw a SIFF film, Kiss the Bride with a couple of my girlfriends.

For those who don't know what SIFF is, it's a Seattle based film festival that hosts hundreds of international and national films. It lasts about 25 days with multiple screenings of each film. All different genres of films are present and a lot of directors come too. Essentially- a film connoisseur's wet dream.

It's a Seattle event not to be missed.

But back to the movie review at hand- Kiss the Bride is an independent film that is basically a gay version of My Best Friend's Wedding, in fact there are multiple Julia Roberts referencing throughout the film. Which, to me, really endears the film to its audience because I am a big fan of movies that make fun of themselves a little bit. Shrek, Enchanted, and America's Sweethearts come to mind.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked Kiss the Bride. It follows the story of Matt, a successful gay magazine editor living in San Francisco, who decides to go back to his Podunk home town when he receives his former best friend's, Ryan, (and first gay lover- "he taught me what it was like to kiss a man . . . and that thing with his tongue") wedding invitation to a WOMAN named Alex.

Matt flies home after being gone for the past decade because it's a humanitarian mission to tell Ryan that he doesn't have to do this. He doesn't have to conform. Matt also happens to possibly still be in love with Ryan because none of his boyfriends since him have measured up; possibly "The One Who Got Away".

Matt is the new Julia Roberts.

When Matt arrives he meets the wife-to-be, Alex played by Tori Spelling, in an awkward stripper scene (look out for a cameo of Spelling's husband) and finds her to be charming, cute, and well, "terrific." Alex and Matt instantly take a friendly liking to each other and so the love triangle begins before Ryan even knows that Matt's in town.

As the countdown to the wedding continues, there are moments of great comedic timing, over-the-top cheesiness yet unexpected scenarios to keep it interesting, lessons about love and commitment, and some well-written lines.

If you like rom-coms and like a little twist thrown in, my recommendation is to GO SEE IT!

Sasquatch Festival

Anyone who lives in Seattle, or the Pacific Northwest, knows about the annual Sasquatch Festival.

Every Memorial Day Weekend, hippies, hipsters, and music lovers alike make the trek from Seattle, Vancouver, BC, and Portland (to name a couple of cities) to the beautiful Gorge Ampitheater for a three festival of music.

These days there are three different stages, mile long bathroom lines, and the prices of beer and food get about a dollar more expensive every year but it still is a place for amazing music.

I couldn't afford a three day pass but I went up on Sunday. Despite the sunny drive out to George, WA we got pelted by a little mini rain storm for maybe an hour on Sunday before it cleared up and we headed in to catch the end of Truckasaurus.

Then we saw the Blue Scholars who rocked (and received a nod from Death Cab later in the evening). After being up and close for the scholars we took a seat on the grass to watch a great show from Tegan and Sara.

Then we saw a little bit of The Presidents before heading to see The Kooks. Unfortunately, The Kooks took too long to grace the stage, so we left the area and headed down to watch Death Cab for Cutie.

Now Death Cab was one hell of a performance. Honestly, his voice sounds better in person than on CD or radio and they just rocked it. Really, just rocked it.

Then we took a step back from up front and watched The Cure. It wasn't as good as I expected it and I was definitely tired from drinking beer and being outside all day. Regardless, I can still say that I say The Cure.

All in all my Memorial Day Weekend Sunday kicked ass, how was yours?
